Storm season is part of life here. A few smart steps help your system come through safely.

Before the storm

Preparation is simple and can prevent expensive damage.

  • Clear loose items from around the outdoor unit

  • Check that the unit is secured and level

  • Turn the system off at the thermostat and breaker if a storm is on the way

  • Do not cover the unit with a tarp or plastic, which can trap moisture

  • Consider a surge protector for your system

During the storm

Stay inside, and do not try to protect equipment in the middle of the storm. Your safety comes first, and equipment can be repaired or replaced.

After the storm

Take these steps before you turn the system back on.

  1. Walk around the outdoor unit and look for debris, damage, and bent fins.

  2. Check for standing water or flooding around the unit.

  3. Look inside for water stains near the indoor unit and in the attic.

  4. If anything looks damaged or wet, leave the system off and call us.

  5. If everything looks normal, turn the system on and watch it for the first few minutes.

When flooding is a concern

If water reached the outdoor unit, the electrical parts, or the furnace, do not turn it on. Wet electrical equipment can be dangerous and can be damaged further when powered. A technician can inspect and dry it safely.

Protecting against surges

Power surges are one of the most common causes of storm related HVAC damage. A surge protector at the breaker panel or at the equipment gives you inexpensive protection for expensive parts.
