Our AC quit on the hottest day of the week. They came out the same afternoon, explained exactly what failed, and had us cool again within two hours.
An air conditioner that runs without cooling is one of the most common service calls we get. The cause is usually one of a few things: restricted airflow, a refrigerant leak, or an electrical part that is no longer doing its job.
This guide helps you narrow it down and decide whether to call. If your home is very hot or someone in it is elderly, ill, or very young, do not wait.
What You Notice
These are the signs people usually notice first:
Air from the vents feels warm or only slightly cool
The system runs constantly and the house never reaches the set temperature
Ice on the outdoor lines or the indoor coil
Water pooling near the indoor unit
Rooms that cool unevenly
Could Also Be
Signs It Is This
The air coming out feels about the same as room temperature
The outdoor unit is running but the fan is not spinning
You hear clicking or humming and then nothing
The system turns on and off in short cycles
Is It Safe to Keep Running?
Running a struggling air conditioner can damage the compressor. If the system is not cooling, turn it off at the thermostat for an hour and check the filter. If it is still not cooling, call us instead of running it all day.
In extreme heat, protect anyone who is elderly, ill, or very young. Move them to a cooler place if the home is getting too warm.
What You Can Check Yourself
Replace a dirty air filter
Make sure vents and returns are open and unblocked
Check that the thermostat is set to cool and the temperature is below the room temperature
Check that the circuit breaker has not tripped
Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit
If none of that helps, a technician needs to measure the system. Please do not add refrigerant yourself.
Go Deeper
Why It Happens
Cooling depends on a closed loop of refrigerant that absorbs heat inside and releases it outside. Anything that restricts airflow, leaks refrigerant, or weakens the electrical parts that run the compressor and fans reduces cooling.
Parts Involved
Air filter and return duct
Evaporator coil
Condenser coil and fan
Compressor and capacitor
Refrigerant lines and charge
Thermostat and control board
What a Technician Does
A technician measures airflow, temperature drop, refrigerant pressures, and electrical readings. They show you the results, explain what failed, and give you a written price before any repair begins.
When It Happens
Quick Facts
Likely cause
Low refrigerant, dirty coils, or a failing capacitor
Also described as
AC blowing warm air, house will not cool, weak cooling
Urgency
Same day if it is very hot or someone is vulnerable
Most common when
Peak summer afternoons
Typical fix time
1 to 3 hours for most causes
First thing to check
Check the air filter and make sure the thermostat is set to cool.
